Winter Wonderland?

Now that Grey Cup is over (maybe next year Bombers!) and there is a gentle layer of snow blanketing the ground in Winnipeg, my thoughts are turning to Christmas. I’ve often wondered how they celebrate the season in other places, so a few years ago, I traveled down to Louisiana and Texas to check out their preparations.

I was intrigued to find that in Kilgore, they build a snowhill and indulge in the fine sport of tubing – in a place where there is no snow! And in Marshall, they go to great lengths to make an ice-skating rink, using a system of coils, sand, water, freezing agents – and a little Christmas magic of course!

The travel feature Dreaming Of A White Christmas explores these fun traditions, and more. It also offers a delicious recipe for homemade wassail – Louisiana style!

To put together this freelance writing website, I’m drawing upon an archive of stories written over the past 15 years. It’s been neat going through my collection, as I’m finding that some of the stories are really fun to read again. For your reading pleasure, I’m choosing only the best ones I’ve got – which is why I’ve decided to post The Axl Effect.

Reliving the glory

As summer turns to fall here in Winnipeg, thoughts turn from golfing and rowing, to curling and hockey. Oddly enough, hockey is something I started pursuing at the age of almost-40. And boy, was it fun! While learning to play, I wrote about the trials and tribulations in a blog that was featured on NHL.com. You can now read all of these stories here on this website – under the section The Hockey Bag.

At the moment, you’ll see that the stories only go up to Chapter 16. This is because a knee injury (unrelated to hockey) kept me out of the game for two winters. And then, when I was finally ready to come back… sadly, my hockey team dismantled. Which meant there was no team to return to last year.

At the current time, I remain in hockey team limbo. However, I do plan on getting back into the game again someday. Stay tuned! Til then… I hope you will read – and enjoy – my funny stories about learning to play hockey. Check out The Hockey Bag. And please start at Chapter 1…
