RoseAnna has been a writer all her life. Her love affair with the written word can be traced back to a poem she wrote for Warren Elementary school newspaper at the age of eight, and starting a journal at the age of nine. The same year, she won third place in a Christmas short story contest presented by the Stonewall Argus – and experienced the thrill of having her work published in a real newspaper, with a real byline, for the first time. She was also excited by the $20 prize that came with it, because it afforded her the chance to get her ears pierced, with enough money left over to buy doodle art.

Me and canoeAfter moving to Winnipeg at ten years old, RoseAnna wrote letters to dearly missed country classmates. At her new school in the ‘big city’ she wrote and illustrated a children’s book, and wrote her first speech while running for elementary school president in Grade 6. Junior high brought many new writing adventures – creating a newspaper during library class, publishing a poem in a book of student poetry, and giving the valedictorian address at Grade 9 graduation. In high school, RoseAnna discovered that writing song lyrics lessened the hurt of teenage heart-breaks, and keeping a diary reflected upon the ups-and-downs of becoming an adult. She also enjoyed delivering the teachers’ roast at Grade 12 grad.

Then came the most amibitious project to date – creating, writing, producing and distributing a newspaper for fellow summer camp staff on Lake of the Woods, all on a volunteer basis. Camp Stephens Surroundings was a true labour of love – and a IMGP9057bona fide hit! Published every two weeks for two seasons running, you would often find RoseAnna typing away in the wee hours before cranking out each highly anticipated issue on the old Gestetner duplicating machine. Hot off the presses! It was also a sign of things to come, as ten years later, RoseAnna found herself a corporate partner and co-creator of the entertainment weekly Connect!, which put out 28 issues in Winnipeg during 1998. It was a dream come true for this wanna-be-publisher, albeit short lived.

Today, RoseAnna is extremely satisfied to have made a successful career out of the craft of writing. She writes and edits for a variety of artistic and commercial applications, taking great pleasure in refining written messages for others. She also entertains the masses as a freelance writer and contributor of feature articles for newspapers, magazines, and the growing online market.

IMGP5310While the next evolution of RoseAnna’s writing is yet to take shape, it will soon venture into the realm of books – with non-fiction and fiction manuscripts in the works. She also considers herself a writer ‘in development’ for film and television screenplays, and is learning the craft through mentorships, writer programs, and professional development opportunities. In other words, it’s still on her list of ‘things to do’ in life.
